June 2, 2026: Sargeant Bay Society AGM

Our annual general meeting was held by Zoom.

June 3, 2026: Yellow Flag Iris removal

We met at 9 am for another productive day of yellow flag iris removal. Yellow flag iris is a highly invasive aquatic plant, which aggressively displaces native wetland vegetation, and forms dense, sediment-trapping root mats that alter water flow.

May 23, 2026: Birding on the Berm

We met at 9 am and Tony Greenfield once again led our intrepid birders in listening and looking for all the recently-arriving migrants and the long-term residents of the berm and adjacent forested areas.

May 17, 2026: Botany of Sargeant Bay Provincial Park

We joined our favourite local botany expert Kye Goodwin at 9:30 am for a morning exploration of the trails above and below Redrooffs for plants, fungi, mosses, and other notable plants.

May 14, 2026: Spring Berm and Beach Clean Up

A group came together from 9 till 11 in the morning to participate in the annual Sargeant Bay Provincial Park spring berm and beach cleanup. Each year volunteers clear debris from the beach as well as extra brush and debris from the upper berm. This improves access and enjoyment of both the upper berm and the beach at Sargeant Bay.

May 8, 2026: Bats over the Berm

Did you know that you can “listen” to bats as they fly around you in the evening while they are hunting for insects over the marsh in Sargeant Bay? At this event, we met up at 8:15pm in the lower parking lot of the park with Dr. Michelle Evelyn of the Sunshine Coast Wildlife Project. She showed us how bat researchers listen to bat signals with digital technology and bring their high frequency calls down to a level that humans can hear – and see displayed visually on a tablet.

2025 Activities

October 21: Berm and Beach Cleanup at the Park

The annual fall berm and beach cleanup ran from 9 am to noon. It was organized by the Sargeant Bay Society and the Sargeant Bay Streamkeepers. We had already had a few Pink and Coho salmon arrive in the fish ladder and welcome additional volunteers to help our Streamkeeper group monitor salmon from mid October until December.

August 9: Intertidal Exploration with Lee-Ann Ennis and Critter Dipping with Dr. Donna Giberson

Guests were invited to search the sands, seaweeds and rocky outcrops for marine invertebrates, fish, sea stars and other creatures, and to bring them up to the wet tanks for LeeAnn to identify before returning them to their home.

Following on last year’s successful introduction to the freshwater microscopic world, Donna once again brought her field microscopes so we could examine samples of the freshwater environment found in the wetland and lake behind the berm. Donna is Professor Emerita in entomology and freshwater ecology from the U. of PEI.

On Sunday July 21st, the Annual Intertidal Exploration Event was held at Sargeant Bay. We had a great turnout! Adults and children alike helped collect, observe and document marine life in the intertidal zone of Sargeant Bay. This year we also had field microscopes set up to view fresh water and sea water microorganisms. Big thanks to Lee Ann Ennis and Dr. Donna Giberson for helping make the day such a success.
